Overnight Oats with Chocolate & Coconut
This quick & easy recipe is a favourite for my husband & I, and the best part is its super easy!
Did you know that Oats (Avena sativa) are among the healthiest grains on earth (2), and being full of anti-oxidants, vitamins, minerals & importantly fibre, making the nutrient composition well-balanced (1). Whole oats help lower blood pressure by increasing our nitric oxide levels which is a gas molecule which helps to dilate blood vessels & leads to better blood flow! Not only that, but oats also reduces LDL (the bad fats) & this reduces total cholesterol levels, reduces blood sugars & insulin response but (what Sharon loves) is that they increase growth of good bacteria in the digestive tract (2).
With the small amount of raw Cacao (not Cocoa) it gives the yummy chocolatey taste thats intense & bitter. As its not heat treated like cocoa is, so the health benefits of flavonoids are retained-which also has been shown to help lower LDL & boost our heart health (3), so YES we can have chocolate in our lives!
The key to eating well is to enjoy a variety of nutritious foods from each of the food groups, which ensures that we increase sufficient intake of all nutrients, which inturn can protect our bodies from chronic diseases & may improve our quality of life & longevity (1) – now that has to be a positive reason!
