Valentine’s Day is fast approaching, and its a wonderful excuse to celebrate LOVE!

Originally, a Western Christian Feast Day, honouring Christian martyrs named Saint Valentine, its now recognised as a tribute to romance in many regions of our world. As a day to appreciate our special relationships, it is also the opportunity to focus on that importanty relationship with yourself.

Today, at HH&HA I wanted to use this Valentine’s Day to shine a light of love on herbal medicine, because I LOVE HERBS!

There is many herbal potions & formulas to help attract a lover, for thousands of years the elusive & magikal remedy to find love has been a holy grail for Millenia! These “amazing” LOVE potions will most often contain aphrodisiac herbs, which are named after the Greek Goddess of LOVE – Aphrodite. Aphrodisiac herbs are frequently associated with romance because they are valid remedies for ensuring male & female potency, & increasing libido, pleasure & sexual performance (hubba hubba)…Enhanced sexual behaviour may provide increased relationship satisfaction & improve our self-esteem. The hunt for these effective aphrodisiac herbs has been constant over human existence. With strong evidence to back up their claims, herbs with aphrodisiac qualities include Korean ginseng, saw palmento, damiana, tribulus, saffron & muira puama.

When we are stressed and at times of uncertainty, when pleasure feels like a distant possibility, plants can be turned to for not only nourishment but also healing. Herbs are healing, and wonderful sources of support for sensuality, vitality, and pleasure, herbs also have an innate ability to restore deficient & depleted energy. If you plan to pick your own bouquet, or simply add to a meal, some supportive, uplifting & heart-warming herbs that you could use to show love this Valentine’s Day could include Rosemary, Lavender, Lemon Balm, Lime flowers, Mistletoe, Gotu Kola, to name just a few.

What ever tomorrow does or doesn’t bring, take some time for yourself too. Take a long soothing bath, add a stocking filled with oats to create a milky bath that is also soothing & luxurious on the skin, or add some lavender petals or lavender essential oil to not only soothe the skin but also the sense of smell. Carry on your clothing a sprig of Rosemary, as this brings a sense of forefilment & clarity, or add a drop or two of your favourite essential oil to your pulse points (wrists, ankles, neck) and take the fragrance with you into your daily meditation. Perhaps the simplicity of a herbal tea & a quiet moment to reflect would suit you better, try Chamomile to calm the body & mind, Lemon Balm Tea to evoke alertness & a heightened sense of well-being, or my favourite, a healing & health beneficial cup of Green Tea. Diffusing a single or blend of oils throughout the home can also be a lovingly beautiful way of enveloping yourself or your loved ones. All ideas to inspire you this Valentine’s Day!

Love & Light to you,                                                                                                                                                                           Sharon x
