Have you heard of Reiki?
Well take a few minutes to read my blog on this very topic! It might be just what you have been searching for…
Energetic or spiritual healing has been documented & practiced in nearly every civilisation throughout the span of human existence. From the healing through Mana by the Kahunas of Hawaii, Chi in China, Qi in Japan, Prana in Hindu tradition & the presence of the Holy Spirit in Christian lore, to name a few, healing methods based on the belief in the transference of a Universal, all pervading life energy have always existed. The energetic healing modality I’d like to share with you is Reiki.
Reiki (pronounced ray-kee), is a biofield energy therapy that was formalised in Japan by a Buddhist named Mikao Usui in the mid 1800’s & introduced the West by Hawayo Takata in the late 1930’s starting in the US & spreading further since then.
The principles of the practice are based on the fact that everything in the Universe is made up of energy, and when that energy is out of balance, illness or disease occurs. This imbalance can be restored by a trained practitioner skilled in the ability to passively flow energy to a recipient in turn allowing the rebalanced body to heal itself. During a Reiki therapy session, the practitioner places their hands slightly above, or directly on the recipient, using a systemic series of hand placements. Practitioners are trained by a Reiki Master & can achieve three levels of skills. At level 1 (1st degree), the practitioner learns how to open the energy channels on a physical level to connect to the Universal life force energy. At this level, the practitioner also learns the concept of Reiki self-care, an added bonus to us practitioners – to heal ourselves! At level 2 (2nd degree), the practitioner learns Reiki symbols & achieves level 2 attunement. Reiki symbols allow the practitioner to connect more deeply to the Universal energy, as well as draw on the qualities that the symbols represent. At this level, the practitioner also learns how to provide Reiki at a distance – so no matter where on our planet you are, you can receive Reiki! Finally, at level 3 (3rd degree, or Reiki Master), the practitioner is now at the teacher’s level & has the knowledge, experience & skills to attune new practitioners – to share this modality even further!
But, how does Reiki fit into today’s modern world? PERFECTLY of course!
Although the mechanisms of healing involved in Reiki remain a mystery to Western science, one review of more than 150 controlled empirical studies of energetic or spiritual healing, showed that more than HALF demonstrated significant results! By commonly accepted standards for establishing treatment efficiency, “if healing were a drug, it would be accepted as effective on the basis of this evidence!”. In contemporary Western civilisation, patients are consulting alternative healers in increasing numbers, & this increased attention is due, in part, to increasing dissatisfaction with modern medical & psychiatric care. Further evidence-based Reiki research that has been published in peer-reviewed journals have been published for decades. In a collective review of over 13 Reiki studies published between 1998 & 2016, showed that Reiki was more effective than placebo. Studies that accessed Reiki’s effectiveness for pain specifically on cancer patients who received Reiki Therapy plus Opioids, showed that Reiki reduces pain. Whilst further studies show that Reiki can also reduce the need for pain medications following various major surgeries, chemotherapy, caesarean births, and even more impressive was the findings in another study that showed positive brain activity on people who suffer with Epilepsy! Close to my heart, are the benefits elderly people had following Reiki to reduce pain, stress & anxiety as an adjunct therapy for Dementia! Furthermore, research has provided evidence of the effectiveness of Reiki’s energetic healing helping people with depression, blood pressure & the reduction of discomfort & stress associated with illness, all of which are vitally important for recovery.
As we know, alternative therapies such as Reiki are slowly being integrated into our mainstream healthcare, in some countries Reiki is also being incorporated into the defence forces with promising, effective results!
This frontier topic, now finally coming of age in our modern culture, energetic healing is beginning to be used by Western medicine, including Doctors, Nurses, Psychotherapists, & a number of other health professionals as complements to traditional interventions & for good reason!
